 CAMPDRAFTING

In a brief description, the aim of a campdraft is for competitors to block a cow from its heard in the 'camp'. Then try to direct it or guide it through the course, (this being either left hand or right hand course).

The minimum time limit to complete the course is 40 seconds and the maximum, 50 seconds. When scoring a campdraft, the total amount of points that a competitor may get is 100 points. Points are allocated for certain performance tasks including cut-out: 26 points, horse-work: 70 points, and course: 4 points. There are no less than 6 head of cattle in the camp at anyone time and the maximum amount is left up to the judge.

Sporting

Sporting is a competitive sport in pony club, where by horse and rider compete with others to get the fastest time in certain events.

BARREL RACE: Consists of three barrels (200 litre drums) with a distance between them of 27 meters. They are set up in a triangular shape. (barrels on three points of triangle). Riders may either go to the right or left hand barrel first making two left hand turns and one right (left, right, right) or two right hand turns and one left (right, left, left). The winner is the person with the fastest time. Disqualification can occur if the competitor touches the barrel with there hand, or does not compete the course properly. Also, a penalty of five seconds will be added to a competitors time, if they knock down a barrel.

STOCK HORSE RACE: It is set up like the barrel race though with three pegs/poles. From the start line, the competitors must take a right hand turn around the right peg, a left hand turn around the left peg, then a right hand turn around the end peg before heading back over the start line. Elimination will occur if the course is done incorrectly, or if a peg is knocked over or broken. The winner is the person with the fastest time.

FLAG RACE: Consists of 5 pegs/poles, each spaced 5.5 meters apart. The aim of this event is to collect all the flags (which are on the 5 poles) and place them in the cask/bucket. The farthest flag must be picked up first, then placed in the cask, then the second farthest, etc. Elimination occurs if a flag falls on the ground. The winner is the competitor with the fastest time.

BENDING RACE: This event also consists of 5 pegs/poles with a pacing of 5.5 meters. To complete the bending race, competitors start on the left hand side of the first peg and bend right and left alternatively through the pegs. Then turn right at the end peg and bend back. Elimination occurs if a peg is broken or knocked down. The winner is the competitor with the fastest time.

FIGURE OF EIGHT: As can be gathered from this events name, the competitors complete a figure eight and the winner does this in the fastest time. If a peg is broken or knocked down, elimination occurs.

SPORTING FIGURE OF EIGHT: The rider may start either direction in this event though must make a right hand turn around the peg and then a left hand turn around the second peg. There is two lines on either side of the event. Elimination occurs if any hoof of a horse goes over the lines or if a peg is knocked down or broken.

Making a right hand turn around the top middle peg. Bending around the top pegs, making another right hand turn around the top middle peg, and bending back before going over the start line.

KEYHOLE RACE: The course can be seen on the diagram. The aim of this event is to ride through the land, turn in the circle around the peg (left or right) and ride back through the land, and through the start/finish line. Elimination occurs if any hoof of a horse goes over the line of the keyhole or if the peg is knocked down or broken.

Also, loss of time occurs on the first two refusals.

BEN-BAR-AFT RACE: The rider bends through four pegs, makes a right hand turn around a drum, picks up a flag and swaps it with another. The winner is the person who completes this the fastest. Elimination will occur if a barrel or peg is knocked over, if the rider touches the barrel with there hand, or if a flag is dropped.

The winner is the person who completes this the fastest.
